Long ago, in land far away (10 min. drive from my flat in SLC), I was boon wizard companion to Kevin Sorbo. I remember adventuring as a lad with him in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. I admire Maestro Sorbo's smashing work in Christian cinema, too. Getting to hang out with him on set is one of my most cherished memories.
The day began early at wardrobe and makeup: over 3 hours to get my full wizard on. Half-way through the day, we were on a wee break when the backdoor flung open to two men, one trailing the other. I saw the leader was carrying a Saker Falcon. He walked up to me, threw me a glove and asked if I wanted to hold it. That's like asking if a frog's ass is water-tight! I've wanted to hold one since I can remember breathing.
But nothing can eclipse the memory of Maestro Sorbo's boon companionship on set that day. He was most generous with his attentions and energy.. and every bit the true life hero he was on screen to me as a boy.
Instantly I noticed we were the same height, Maestro Sorbo and I. He was kind to offer me his professional experience concerning his height in the industry. While talking throughout the day, we learned we had the same right knee injury. We both love skiing, and then suddenly we started speaking Italian!! It was too surreal. Kevin Sorbo and I rattling away with each other in Italian?!? I'd never had this dream before, but I was living it nonetheless.
Apparently, before he was Hercules on TV, he was modeling a few years in Europe and living in Italy. But then we were also able to share our passion of ancient scripture, especially regarding the historical linguistics requisite for contextual comprehension and liberation of holy writ. Again, we spoke of scriptural linguistic mysteries when I saw him briefly at ComicCon later that year.
You're still a hero to me. Cheers, Maestro Sorbo, for the unforgettable crossings of our paths!
